Tehran, Iran, Nov. 01 – Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi defended threats by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against the state of Israel as the policy of the Islamic Republic, state-run dailies reported on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad called for the destruction of Israel and threatened leaders of Muslim countries that developed ties with the Jewish state that they would burn in the “fire” of their nations’ “fury”.

“The President’s remarks were a repeat of the past positions of the Islamic Republic”, Hashemi Shahroudi told a meeting of senior judiciary officials.

“The usurper state of Israel is an illegitimate entity”, he said.

The judiciary chief dismissed the global reaction to the Iranian president’s speech as “nothing new”.
