Tehran, Iran, Nov. 15 – United States’ companies are refusing to sell Iran spare parts for passenger planes, Iran’s aviation chief said.

Saeid Hessami, head of Iran’s Airlines Organisation, announced that manufacturing giants Boeing and General Electric were unwilling to sell Iran the spare parts needed for its planes.

Hessami said that presently five Iranian passenger planes were grounded because they lacked the parts needed to fly.

Washington, which cut diplomatic relations with Tehran in 1979 following the siege of the American embassy by radical students following the line of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, has imposed trade sanctions on Iran, and U.S. companies are forbidden from trading with the Islamic Republic.

Hessami said that Boeing and General Electric’s stance went beyond what was required of them by Washington’s regulations.
