Tehran, Iran, Nov. 21 – Iraqi President Jalal Talabani arrived in Tehran on Monday in the first trip by an Iraqi head of state to Iran in more than 30 years.

Talabani is scheduled to meet hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as well as Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Secretary General of the National Security Council Ali Larijani during his three-day visit in the Islamic Republic.

Several state-run news outlets in Tehran have reported that the Iraqi leader may also meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The meetings are expected to focus primarily on security issues.

Last week, Iraqi national security adviser Muwafaq al-Rubaie also travelled to Iran, where he met with Ahmadinejad and senior Iranian officials.

From 1980 to 1988, Iran and Iraq fought a gruelling war which left more than a million people dead.
