Tehran, Iran, Nov. 29 – A semi-official daily accused a British cultural centre in Tehran on Tuesday of carrying out “colonialist activities”.

The hard-line daily Kayhan claimed that “British Council” was attempting to increase its influence over Iran’s scientific, cultural, and social centres.

“British Council, a British cultural centre which is more important for London’s government that their embassy in Iran, has been trying to influence the form and content of the country’s social, scientific, and cultural charters under the pretext of carrying out joint projects with the Mayor’s Office and the Education and Culture ministries”, the report said. “Considering recent political developments, it has tried to increase its colonialist activities through its proxies”.

The report added that members of British Council had recently met with a number of “secularists” to discuss Iran’s political future. Unlike the United States, which was pursuing a policy of regime change, London was hoping to convince Tehran to change its actions, the report said, adding that the council had been concerned by the recent purge of moderate officials in Iran’s Foreign Ministry and their replacement with hard-liners.
