Tehran, Iran, Feb. 28 – Two earthquakes measuring 5.8 and 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Iranian towns of Orzuieh and Jiroft respectively Tuesday morning, state radio reported.

At 11.01 the first quake shook the town of Orzuieh and minutes later at 11.20 a second quake hit near the town of Jiroft.

The two towns lie in the south-eastern Iranian province of Kerman.

The province is very earthquake prone.

Last February, a strong earthquake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, hit the town of Zarand in Kerman, killing some 600 people and injuring hundreds.

In December 2003, tens of thousands of people were killed when Kerman’s majestic mud-brick city Bam was flattened in a powerful earthquake.

The report did not mention the scale of damages in Tuesday’s quakes.
