Iran warns it may review oil deals if UN takes action

London, Mar. 14 – Iran threatened on Tuesday that it would revise its international oil contracts if the United Nations Security Council took action against it for violating its international obligations regarding its nuclear program.

The warning came from Iran’s Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh who was speaking to reporters while in the south-western oil-rich province of Khuzestan, the official state news agency reported.

“If necessary, Iran will reconsider its oil contracts with other states”, Vaziri-Hamaneh said.

“Iranian officials should recognise this necessity”, he said.

His comments mirrored those made by Iran’s Interior Minister last week.

Radical Shiite cleric Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi announced that Iran would cut off its oil exports to the West if the Security Council ordered sanctions to be imposed on the Islamic Republic.

“If sanctions are imposed, we will definitely use the oil tool and other tools and we will stop at nothing”, he said.

The Oil Minister’s comments were also a noticeable shift from his comments earlier this month, when he had said Tehran would continue to export oil even if sanctions were imposed.

Tehran faces possible punitive measures by the Security Council over its refusal to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency on its suspected nuclear weapons program.
