London, Mar. 30 – The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday gave Iran 30 days to suspend its uranium enrichment program.

The presidential statement said the Security Council noted “with serious concern” Iran’s decision to resume enrichment-related activities, including research and development, and to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty’s Additional Protocol.

“The Security Council also notes with serious concern that the Director General’s report of 27 February 2006 (GOV/2006/15) lists a number of outstanding issues and concerns, including topics which could have a military nuclear dimension, and that the IAEA is unable to conclude that there are no undeclared nuclear materials or activities in Iran”, the statement, adopted unanimously by the 15-nation council, said.

The council called on Iran to “take the steps required by the IAEA Board of Governors”, and said that it was particularly important for Tehran to re-establish “full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, to be verified by the IAEA”.

It asked IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei to present a report to both the IAEA Board of Governors and the Security Council in 30 days on whether Iran had complied with the demands of the UN nuclear watchdog.
