Tehran, Iran, Apr. 23 – Iran played down on Sunday possible future talks with the United States over the issue of Iraq.

“Don’t overplay these talks, as they are not very important and nothing has happened yet”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi told reporters.

“Preparations must be made. So far nothing has been prepared and we are in no rush to have the preliminaries organised”, Asefi said.

On Saturday, Iraq’s parliament elected President Jalal Talabani for a second term. It also elected Mahmoud al-Mashhadani as Speaker of the Parliament. The Shiite block meanwhile approved Jawad al-Maliki as Prime Minister.
