Tehran, Iran, May 03 – Iran said on Wednesday that the United States’ foreign policy was in turmoil.

“America with its extremist ideology is provoking international chaos”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said in response to comments Tuesday by a top U.S. State Department official who hinted at sanctions being imposed on Iran by the international community over its nuclear non-compliance.

“The U.S.’s foreign policy lacks logic and the American government uses the language of threat and intimidation even against its allies to push forward its agenda”.

U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns told CNN on Tuesday that backing from France, Britain, and Germany would see the implementation of a United Nations Security Council resolution against Tehran. “I think you will see a serious Chapter 7 resolution emerge in the next couple of days at the United Nations”, Burns said.

A resolution under the UN Charter’s Chapter 7 makes any demands mandatory and paves the way for the use of sanctions and possibly force.

Asefi said that Burns comments in Paris were a sign that Washington’s foreign policy was in “turmoil”.

“Today, America faces an internal crisis and is trying to transfer this crisis from within America to various points of the world. By creating international chaos it is trying to cover up its internal problems”, he said.

While maintaining that Tehran hoped for a diplomatic solution to the international standoff over its nuclear program, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “We will not abandon our inalienable right to make peaceful use of nuclear knowledge. America’s empty threats will not create a void in the determination of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
