London, May 18 – Hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent a message to Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian news agency SANA reported on Thursday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki travelled to Damascus on an unannounced visit and met with the al-Assad, delivering Ahmadinejad’s message.

During the meeting, Mottaki and the Syrian leader discussed Tehran-Damascus ties as well as issues relating to Iraq and the Middle East conflict.

The official Iranian news agency later reported that al-Assad had expressed support for the Islamic Republic to continue with its nuclear program despite international opposition.

The West suspects Tehran is seeking to produce atomic weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program.
