London, Jun. 06 – Weapons smuggled from Iran have been discovered in Iraq’s southern city of Basra, the prominent satellite network al-Jazeera reported on Monday.

The network quoted an Iraqi cleric, Ayatollah Hassan al-Moyed, as saying that the arms cache was discovered in a shed in Basra, Iraq’s second largest city.

In a separate report on Monday, al-Jazeera quoted the spokesman of the Sunni group, the Association of Muslim Scholars, as saying that Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) had infiltrated much of Basra.

In March, United States Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld accused Tehran of sending elite members of its Revolutionary Guards into Iraq to cause harm to the future of that country.

Sunni groups have accused Tehran of trying to flare sectarian strife between Iraqi Shiites and Sunnis.
