Tehran, Iran, Jun. 17 – Police in Tehran have issued a ban on the use of motorcycles on Saturday afternoon as Iran’s national football team squares off against favourites Portugal in the 2006 World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany.

Tehran’s chief of police Brigadier General Morteza Talai told the government-run news agency Fars that the ban would be enforced in the capital’s main squares and routes.

Police fear young people may attempt to use the occasion as an excuse to wage anti-government protests and attack state buildings after the match.
