Baghdad, Jul. 06 Iraqs military has launched a new operation to secure the countrys porous border with Iran, a Baghdad daily reported.
The daily al-Dastour wrote on Tuesday that the operation was taking place with the support of United States-led forces in Iraq.
The daily quoted an unnamed source in the command headquarters of Iraqs eighth army division as saying that the operation had been codenamed Iron Gate.
Personnel from the divisions third brigade were taking part in the operation, it added.
The report said the operation was taking place in the north of the Iraqi province of al-Wassit. The province has been a favourite crossing point for Iranians entering Iraq illegally.
