Tehran, Iran, Aug. 28 – Iran said on Monday that the United States ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton was not competent to be in the world body.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times on Saturday, Bolton said that the U.S. might ramp up its own sanctions on Tehran and encourage other states to follow suit if the UN Security Council failed to impose sanctions on Iran after its August 31 deadline to suspend uranium enrichment expired.

“Such comments are a blatant insult to the UN and the Security Council and show that certain states want to undermine international norms and disrupt world peace by bullying”, Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham told reporters during his weekly press conference.

“Such people are not competent to be present in the UN”, Elham said.

The Security Council adopted a legally-binding resolution on July 31 ordering Tehran to freeze all its uranium enrichment activities by August 31 or face possible sanctions.

On Sunday, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator vowed that Tehran would never stop uranium enrichment.

“Iran will continue its uranium enrichment. We want to produce our own nuclear fuel. …We will never stop it”, Ali Larijani was quoted as saying by the state-run news agency ISNA.
