London, Dec. 24 – The following is the text of a statement by the Japanese Foreign Ministry issued a day after the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to slap sanctions on Iran because of its refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment activities:

Statement by Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1737 concerning Iran’s Nuclear Issue

December 24, 2006

1. On Sunday, December 24 (New York time: Saturday, December 23), the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1737, which contains measures to be taken by Iran and the other Member States of the United Nations. Japan appreciates the adoption of this resolution which demonstrates the resolute and concerted stance of the international community towards Iran on this issue.

2. Japan is strongly concerned about the current situation concerning Iran’s nuclear issue, and considers it necessary to address this issue in a resolute manner in view of the maintenance of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, the repercussions of this issue on North Korea’s nuclear issue, and the stability of the Middle East, that has a significant bearing on global energy supplies. As a member of the Security Council, Japan has closely consulted and collaborated with the other countries concerned towards the unanimous and prompt adoption of the present resolution.

3. It is Japan’s strong wish that this issue will be resolved peacefully through negotiation. To that end, Japan strongly expects that Iran will abide by the requirements of this resolution including the suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities and return to the negotiation process. Japan intends to continue to urge Iran to do so on every opportunity available.
