WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) — Nearly two-thirds of those asked in a UPI-Zogby International poll said the United States has a responsibility to ensure limits on Iran’s nuclear capability.

A total of 4,824 U.S. residents took part in a March 14-16 Zogby interactive poll looking at a series of questions related to Iran and its nuclear program. Tehran said the program is for peaceful purposes; some Western powers suggest it is for weapons development.

Some 65.9 percent of the poll participants either strongly agreed (36.5 percent) or somewhat agreed (28.4 percent) U.S. officials have a responsibility to limit Iranian uranium enrichment. Some 14.7 percent strongly disagreed and 16.8 percent somewhat disagreed.

However, those respondents didn’t have much faith in U.S. President George Bush being the one to deal with Iran. Nearly half — 46.1 percent — said the president was “poor” in handling the Iran nuclear issue and 20 percent said “fair.” Another 23.3 percent said Bush was “good” on the issue and 6.6 percent said he was “excellent” on the Iranian nuclear problem.

And 42.7 percent of those asked said they had “no trust at all” in Bush’s judgment in dealing with Iran compared to 17.2 percent who said they had a “great deal of trust” in him.
