Tehran, Iran, Nov. 21 – A senior Iranian lawmaker declared in the country’s Majlis, or Parliament that if the suspected nuclear weapons dossier of the Islamic Republic was hauled before the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions the repercussions on the West would be great.

Kazem Jalali, a member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee on Sunday said, “If Iran’s nuclear file is reported or sent to the [United Nations”> Security Council, it will cost the world, the region and Europe dearly”.

Jalali, a deputy from Shahroud, northern Iran, told fellow lawmakers that European countries had reneged on the November 2004 Paris Agreement. Under the deal, the EU-3 – France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – had offered Tehran economic incentives as long as it suspended nuclear fuel cycle activities which could lead to the production of an atomic bomb.

Iran broke the agreement earlier this year when it recommenced uranium conversion activities at a nuclear plant in Isfahan, central Iran.

Jalali said that Tehran had expected Iran’s nuclear file to be closed at earlier meetings of the boards of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in return for having “voluntarily suspended” certain nuclear work.

He said that Iran resumed suspended work at the Isfahan Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) when it realised that the EU was demanding that Iran continue to suspend all nuclear fuel cycle activities. “That is why we started work at the Isfahan UCF. Why should we negotiate [with the EU”> if they plan for us not to carry nuclear fuel cycle work? Does suspension of nuclear activities require that we negotiate and take part in dialogues?”, he said.

Through this bill, we are declaring that if our file is reported or referred to the Security Council, it means that the West is pushing it toward a crisis”.
