Berlin – Iran secretly tested a new surface-to-surface missile last month, the German daily newspaper Die Welt was set to report Saturday, quoting western intelligence sources.

The ballistic missile was believed capable of delivering three nuclear warheads, the Berlin newspaper said in an advance release.

The purpose of the January 17 test had been to collect electronic and aerodynamic measurements from the long-range missile during flight and was conducted by a 15-person engineering team under the direct control of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Die Welt said diplomatic sources in Iran had reported the test was a success.

In late January, General Rakhim Safavi, commander of the Revolutionary Guards which is a military body outside the regular armed forces, said on state television that his force had missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometres.

That distance is sufficient to attack any part of Israel from Iranian soil.
