London, May 16 – United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan urged Iran on Monday to cooperate with European countries that were seeking to find a diplomatic solution to the international standoff over Tehran’s suspected nuclear weapons activities.

“I would urge Iran to cooperate with other European countries to find a solution. It is in everyone’s interest that we settle this issue peacefully”, Annan told reporters in Seoul.

Annan said that he was encouraged by the “intensified diplomatic efforts” to resolve this issue peacefully and seek a negotiated settlement.

He added that the international community had to take “very urgent steps” to deal with Tehran’s proliferation threat.
