WASHINGTON – The United States said on Wednesday that Iran had a clandestine nuclear weapons program and the US commitment was to address the problem through peaceful diplomatic engagement.

“It is becoming increasingly clear to others that despite its public assertions to the contrary, Iran has a clandestine nuclear weapons program,” State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said at a news briefing.

“Our commitment, the commitment of our partners in the international community, including the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors, is to address this problem through peaceful diplomatic engagement,” Ereli said.

Ereli said the United States was committed to bringing to an end to this “illegal and destabilizing” activity of Iran.

Iran has repeatedly denied the US accusations and said it was pursuing a peaceful nuclear program to generate electricity.
