TEL AVIV, Israel, May 26 (UPI) — Israel has warned European and U.S. intelligence services of possible terrorist attacks sponsored by Iran during the World Cup, a Saudi newspaper reports.

Al-Watan said the aim of attacks by Hezbollah would be to demonstrate that Iran can retaliate if it is attacked. Recent reports have suggested that the United States has considered either conventional or nuclear air strikes on Iran’s major nuclear facility if diplomatic efforts fail to end its nuclear program.

Europe and the United States have reportedly set up a joint operations room to deal with threats during the World Cup.

Germany has not received word on whether Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad plans to go to Nuremburg to watch his country’s team play.
