ImageTehran, Feb. 24 – A senior Iranian air force commander announced on Wednesday the formation of Iran’s first squadron of home-made Saeqeh fighter jets.

"The squadron is the first fighter squadron equipped with fighters and equipments made inside the country …..and is capable of detecting and confronting aggressive aircraft and enemy fighters", Brigadier General Seyed Mohammad Allavi was quoted as saying by the state-run Fars news agency.

Allavi, Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army's Air Force for Operations, added that the fighter jets were jointly produced by the Air Force and the Defence Ministry.

Iran has had to concentrate its efforts on developing its own military capabilities following international sanctions which have outlawed the supply of various military equipment to Iran as fears over its nuclear program grow.
