As the lights came on at the end of a movie in Tehran’s Esteghlal cinema on Wednesday evening, those in the theatre saw extensive graffiti on seats, walls and corridors, eyewitnesses claim.

Slogans included: “Our uprising is alive, Khamenei is dead” (referring to Iran’s Supreme Leader), “let us get together on 3 September”, “we will avenge the martyrs and political prisoners”, “sanctions are a prelude to regime change”, “Iranians rise up and strike”, and “death to Khamenei”.
