Mass Execution of Sunni Prisoners Believed Carried Out in Iran

Iran Focus

London, 3 Aug – When special Revolutionary Guards raided hall 10 of ward 4 in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj (west of Tehran) on the afternoon of Monday, August 1, apprehending dozens of Sunni prisoners, and transferring them to an undisclosed location, the Iranian Resistance called forurgent intervention by the United Nations Security Council and Member States, and international human rights organizations, and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and Special Rapporteur.

The prisoners had their hands and feet chained, mouths shut with tape, and heads covered with plastic bags. They were then transferred outside of the ward.  Hours before, the regime’s forces and IRGC members closed all wards and open-air areas, imposing special conditions in the jail. Gohardasht Prison was under the complete IRGC control.

According to the latest information available, the mullahs’ regime is believed to have mass executed those Sunni prisoners.  Their families say that they were told to go to the prison before 15.00 (local time) on Tuesday for a final visit with their loved ones.  Instead, they were stopped and rerouted to the morgue to collect the bodies of their children, who had already been executed.

List of names of 28 Sunni prisoners who were moved on the afternoon of Monday, August 1, 2016:

Families have confirmed the deaths of the first ten prisoners named on this list.  Tragically, although they were able to identify their loved ones, they never had the chance to say good-bye.

Failure to prosecute these crimes against humanity, including past executions of more than 120,000 political prisoners by this regime, and little heed paid to the growing number of executions each year, only encourages the continuation of these crimes, opposition activists say. The vast majority of political prisoners executed in Iran were members of the main opposition People’s Mojahedin or Mujahedin Khalq (PMOI or MEK).

The international community must condition relations with this regime toward the complete halt of all executions in Iran, and the regime’s officials must be placed before justice for their crimes.
