Tehran, Iran, Sep. 02 – A senior cleric on Friday accused the United States of being responsible for Wednesday’s attack in the Iraqi holy town of Kazimiya which was followed by a stampede leaving near to 1,000 worshippers dead.

Ayatollah Mohammad Emami-Kashani told worshippers at Tehran’s Friday prayers, “Al-Qaeda is your brain child. You supported the Baathists and Monafeqin [Iranian opposition group Mojahedin-e Khalq”> and in this way have put Iraq in a precariously desperate situation”.

“America can not clear itself by condemning crimes in Iraq”, Emami- Kashani said. “On the one hand, the tragic event in Kazimiya shows the role of the Arrogance [United States”> and on the other hand it shows the greater awareness and unity of the Iraqi people, the victory of this country, and the people’s following of the Supreme Guide”.

“The Central Intelligence Agency has different masks and disguises; once in the form al-Qaeda, another time in the form the Baathists, and another time in the form of the [Mojahedin-e Khalq”>. It carries out such a terrorist act and then the American President [George W. Bush”> condemns it”, Emami-Kashani said.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had also blamed the U.S. for the deadly stampede.

At least 965 worshippers were killed in the holy Iraqi town when mass hysteria erupted after rumours spread about the presence of suicide bombers among the crowd. A stampede broke out as worshippers tried to cross a bridge over the Tigris River to flee the site. Many drowned or were crushed to death, and several hundred others were left injured.
