Tehran, Iran, Oct. 28 – Iran’s ultra-conservative President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defended on Friday his statement earlier this week calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.

While attending a state-organised demonstration in Tehran during Qods Day, or Jerusalem Day, rallies along with thousands of hard-liners, Ahmadinejad told the state-run IRNA news agency, “It is natural that if a speech is correct and sound, it receives coverage and reaction”.

The United States, Europe, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority have all denounced his comments that “Israel must be wiped off the face of the earth” as unacceptable.

Ahmadinejad rejected international condemnation of his overt threat to the Jewish state. “They are free to talk, but their words lack any credit”.

Thousands of hard-liners took part in Friday’s demonstration. Several dozen effigies of U.S. President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon were set on fire as protesters chanted “Death to America”, “Death to Israel”, and “Death to Britain”.

A number of Israeli and U.S. flags were also trampled on and burnt during the march.
