Iran’s Jahan-e Sanat Daily: The Government Has Chosen the Economic Cycle Over People’s Health

Shops in Iran reopened, while the coronavirus is flaunting in Iran’s cities

In an interview with the Iranian state-run Jahan Sanat daily on Thursday, May 7, the head of Iran’s Sociological Association announced the inefficiency of the government in the fight against the coronavirus.

“These days, despite warnings from the Ministry of Health, the government has created a situation in which coronavirus has become normal for the public. If the same thing happens, we will not remember anymore to wash our hands in the coming week. During the government’s decisions, 132 religious places in white declared provinces were opened, and [President Hassan] Rouhani went on to say that we may conclude that students go to school three days a week or one day a week.”

“The news came as the Deputy Minister of Health announced the deaths of 10 children due to the coronavirus. Of course, in some deprived areas of the country, many children do not have ID cards and belong to the bleak statistics. However, according to the relevant authorities, the announced statistics are the only ones who were tested on the coronavirus. So, 90 percent of the population is in a state of ambiguity. With this situation, the reason for the government’s hasty decisions in the corona crisis is important.

“Some experts believe that the government’s pocket is so empty that it has preferred the economic cycle to the health of the people at this point in time.

“Hossein Serajzadeh, President of the Iranian Sociological Association, said about the reopening of administrative, commercial, and religious places: ‘Sociologically, the government should never have reopened office, commercial, or religious sites so quickly. Due to the reopening of all centers, the situation has become very normal for the people.

“He added: ‘Recently, in a letter, we asked the government to reconsider its decisions through scientific studies. It is true that the economic cycle is very important for the government and even for the people, but they should not have made such a situation normal for everyone, because we all live in the same ship and we will all drown with the slightest event.’

“He added: ‘At the moment, the government and the anti-corona headquarters should reconsider the reopening of places immediately if necessary, given the new data at their disposal. On the other hand, people should not think that the situation has become normal and that the fatigue caused by staying at home should not cause them to ignore health considerations. People need to keep their social and personal distance even more than ever before. In addition to protecting the individual and those around them, personal care will also be useful for the community. The carelessness of an individual can threaten society and help in the ascending process of the infected.’”

The main responsibility to resolve all existing crises is with the government

Serajzadeh blamed Rouhani’s government and said: “The main responsibility to resolve all existing crises is with the government. When there was a quarantine debate, significant groups of people were in trouble, and the living conditions of the people are getting worse every day. Addressing them should have been on the government’s agenda.

“The government broke the quarantine because of economic pressures, while it would have been better if the government had taken on this serious responsibility and helped the people with various financial resources. But unfortunately, the government has become an incompetent government because of the dire economic conditions and sanctions.”

The government’s secrecy in this regard is another weakness of its performance

Serajzadeh said: “First of all, we need to see what process the statistics and information obtained after the reopening. However, the number of patients and deaths officially announced by the Ministry of Health is not correct. The government’s secrecy in this regard is another weakness of its performance. Because this action has made the people’s trust in the government less than before and the depth of this gap is getting bigger every day than yesterday. In this predicament, people have no choice but to take care of themselves.”

People are erupting like volcanoes

In the end, about the possibility of repeating the widespread protests of the people in the post-coronavirus era he said: “Before to the corona crisis, economic pressures from sanctions and mismanagement had gripped the population. Sanctions have created an economic recession in all societies, and in the current situation in Iran, the destructive effects of this recession on the weaker stratum of the society have been demonstrated. For this reason, it can be predicted that a combination of economic pressures and economic, social, and political demands will create a new wave of discontent. If the government does not reconsider its policies. People are erupting like volcanoes.”
