WASHINGTON (AP) — The family of a former FBI agent who went missing from the Iranian resort of Kish Island is renewing its plea for his release on the seventh anniversary of his disappearance.

In a statement Friday, Robert Levinson’s family requested mercy from “those who are holding Bob” and urged the U.S. government “to recognize its duty to bring home one of its own who was taken while serving his country.”

The FBI, which is offering a $1 million reward, said in a statement that it remains committed to finding Levinson.

An Associated Press investigation published in December revealed that Levinson vanished in 2007 while working for the CIA on an unapproved intelligence-gathering mission.

The FBI statement says Levinson went to Kish Island as a “private investigator,” but doesn’t mention the CIA.
