Tehran, Iran, Dec. 26 – About a dozen people die every day in Iran from drug addiction, the equivalent of one death every two hours, an official said earlier this week.

“On average, 11.5 people die from drug addiction every day” in Iran, said Brigadier General Hamid-Reza Abadi who heads the State Security Forces’ anti-narcotics department. His comments were reported by the government-owned news agency Fars on Monday.

Official surveys show that drug smuggling and sales in Iran is approximately a 10-billion-dollar market each year.

Previous estimates have put the total number of illegal-drug users in Iran at more than seven million.

Iran’s government is under close scrutiny for the level of narcotics found in Iranian cities. Many experts fear that certain departments and officials within the Iranian regime are overseeing foreign narcotics imports.
