Tehran, Iran, Aug. 17 – The court hearing for a university student from the town of Kerman, central Iran, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

Hossein Khodayari, a student from Kerman’s Bahonar University, is to be charged with “acting against national security”, a vague term which encompasses virtually all forms of social protests or actions against the ruling clerical authorities.

Khodayari’s lawyer said that his defendant had appeared in court in August 2003 on similar charges.

In recent months, Iranian authorities have stepped up arrests of dissident youths. Shirkou Khaled, a student from the Open University in Sanandaj, northwest Iran, was arrested in his father’s residence last Thursday and taken away by armed agents. There is no information about his present whereabouts.
