London, Nov. 17 – The European Parliament voted to condemn remarks last month by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who proclaimed that Israel “must be wiped off the map” and threatened neighbouring Muslim nations that developed ties with the Jewish state.

A resolution adopted by a large majority of European parliamentarians expressed concern about the “possible consequences of such statements”.

It stressed that the hard-line Iranian president’s remarks “cause concern about Iran’s role in the region and its intentions”.

The Euro-MPs called on Iran to refrain from any support for international terrorist groups, while praising the position of several senior Palestinian officials who condemned Ahmadinejad’s views.

The resolution also welcomed the statement by the Central Council of Muslims in Germany that every nation has to respect international law and the rights of other states.

“The House reaffirms its unalterable commitment to Israel’s right to existence within internationally recognised borders and in security, side by side with an independent and viable Palestinian State”.

The European lawmakers also called upon Tehran to recognise the state of Israel and its “right to live in peace and security”.
