Tehran, Iran, Jan. 09 – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that the United States had faced defeat in its strategies in Iraq and the Middle East.

Speaking in Iran’s holy city of Qom, Khamenei also said that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who had been hospitalised after suffering from a stroke, had been “destroyed” by continued Palestinian resistance against Israel, in comments carried by state television and news agencies.

“America has been politically defeated in Iraq as well as in Palestine since the butcher of the Palestinians who hoped to crack down on the intifada within three months was destroyed”, he said.

The Iranian Supreme Leader also said that the U.S. was pressuring its regional ally Syria as well as Lebanon because its “grand” Middle East Road Map had “been met with failure”.

“If the people and leaders of Syria and Lebanon exercise vigilance, the U.S.’s conspiracies will be thwarted”, Khamenei said.

He went on to say that all the various social movements of the world, including socialism, Marxism, nationalism, and Western liberal democracy, had lost their appeal for the people of the world and Islam, or religious democracy, was the sole alternative. “The eyes of the world are now on [Iran’s”> Islamic revolution and the slogans and way of thinking of this revolution”.
