Tehran, Iran, Jan. 09 – Iran’s former President Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has accepted an invitation to travel to Syria for regional talks.

Rafsanjani, who currently chairs the State Expediency Council, will hold talks with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, according to a press release by the SEC secretariat carried by state-run news agencies.

In a letter, al-Assad said, “Brotherly relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the state of Syria exist and there is a willingness to strengthen relations in the interests of the two nations and all Muslims”.

Regional allies Tehran and Damascus have both been branded by the United States as state sponsors of terrorism.
