London, Jan. 20 – United States Vice President Dick Cheney described Iran on Thursday as a “staunch” supporter of terrorism and said that Tehran was attempting to develop nuclear weapons.

In an interview with CNBC, Cheney said that the U.S. and the greater international community were opposed to a nuclear-armed Iran. “But I do think we need to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons to a nation like Iran”, he added.

The Vice President said that President George W. Bush should not take the military option off the table. “Let’s leave it there”, he said.

He said that the consequences of hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad “armed with nuclear weapons, able to threaten virtually anybody he wants to threaten, and conceivably even contemplate the use of nuclear weapons” was significantly worse than a “spike” in the price of oil

Cheney said that the U.S. would support Israel if it were attacked by Iran.

“The United States wants to support the democracy proponents in Iran”, he said, adding that the outside world had an interest in seeing “true democracy come to Iran instead of the kind of system they have now”.
