Tehran, Iran, Jan. 27 – Iran’s former President Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said on Friday that the European Union was making a mistake in attempting to refer the Islamic Republic’s nuclear file to the United Nations Security Council.

Rafsanjani, who currently chairs the State Expediency Council, said that the West was “crazy, money-grabbing, oppressive, and the real incarnation of the Pharaohs”.

“We must be vigilant in this regard. Even the slightest likelihood of the referral of Iran’s file to the Security Council is very important for us”, Rafsanjani said after a meeting in the holy city of Qom with Ayatollah Ali Meshkini, Speaker of the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body that designates the country’s supreme leader.

“They want us to surrender and that’s difficult for us. And if we resist, we will have to pay a heavy price. This case is a divine test which I hope we will come through with honour”.

The powerful cleric said that pressure exerted on Iran by the West made Iran more “innocent”.

“The Arrogance (United States) does not want a country such as Iran which has a history of fighting blasphemy and oppression to have such power”, Rafsanjani added.
