Tehran, Iran, Feb. 01 – A senior Iranian official threatened that Iran would create “disturbances” for the United States and European Union if they went through with their plan to refer the Islamic Republic to the United Nations Security Council.

Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former president and currently chairman of the State Expediency Council, said that the decision by the five permanent members of the Security Council (P5) and Germany made in London this week to report Iran to the top UN security body demonstrated the West’s “anger and disappointment” over the fact that they could not successfully influence Tehran to abandon its nuclear pursuit, the Fars news agency, which is run by the Office of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reported.

“It might be that you could create problems for us, but in return we will also create disturbances for you. The Iran of today is far different from the Iran of the past”, Rafsanjani said.

He added that the “oppressive move” would only bring the West “disgrace”.

The powerful cleric said that the P5 had not yet understood the “the great depth” of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution and Tehran’s reaction to pressure.

The U.S. calls Iran the biggest state sponsor of terrorism.
