London, Feb. 06 United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan called on Iran on Monday to take confidence-building measures so that it could return to the negotiations table regarding its suspected nuclear weapons activities.
Iran unilaterally breached a deal with the European Union three Britain, France, and Germany to suspend uranium enrichment activities, leading to a decision by the 35-nation board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency to report it to the Security Council.
On Monday, Irans chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani announced that United Nations inspectors would come to the Islamic Republic in the coming days to oversee the resumption of uranium enrichment.
We will not back down on the issue of defending our rights, Larijani said.
Speaking to reporters in Dubai, Annan said, I hope in between Iran will take steps that would help create an environment and confidence-building measures that will bring the parties back to the negotiating table.
