London, Feb. 20 – The United Nations Security Council must not be used as a political tool, Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters after a meeting with Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht in Brussels on Monday.

Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons file was reported to the Security Council earlier this month after Tehran failed to live up to its nuclear obligations.

“The UN Security Council must not be used as a tool in the hands of certain countries”, the Iranian Foreign Minister said. His comments were carried by the Fars news agency, run by the Office of the Supreme Leader.

Mottaki emphasised that Iran would reserve the right to pursue nuclear activities for research and development purposes even if it accepted a proposal from Russia to enrich uranium on its behalf, Reuters reported.

“We believe the time for threats is over”, Mottaki said, adding that there was still time for all sides to reach a compromise to the international deadlock.

“If we reach some compromise … (on the Russian proposal), we continue our preparation from where we are now. That is, the research department will continue its activity”, Mottaki said.
