U.N. Security Council said to meet next week on Iran

-

Reuters: The U.N. Security Council is expected to meet on Iran’s nuclear programme as early as next week, a senior European Union diplomat said on Wednesday. VIENNA (Reuters) – The U.N. Security Council is expected to meet on Iran’s nuclear programme as early as next week, a senior European Union diplomat said on Wednesday.

Asked if the council would likely begin discussing Iran at that time given an impasse in diplomatic efforts to resolve Western suspicions that Iran is secretly seeking to develop atomic weapons, the diplomat told Reuters, “That’s right.”

The diplomat said the council would work quickly to issue a “presidential statement” calling on Iran to suspend all atomic fuel enrichment activity and fully cooperate with U.N. investigations into the nature of its atomic goals.

He added that at this point, the active involvement of the Security Council was necessary and inevitable,

“There is no sign that the Iranians want to compromise,” he said.
