Paris, Jun. 08 French lawmakers called on the European Union and the government of Jacque Chirac to develop a new firm and decisive policy towards Iran in the international standoff over its nuclear program.
At a meting in Paris on Wednesday, the lawmakers accused Tehrans theocratic government of meddling in Iraq and seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Former French Prime Minister Edith Cresson was among those endorsing support for Irans main opposition movement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran.
A declaration was adopted at the meeting censuring Tehran for its suspected nuclear weapons activities and offering support for the NCRI.
We support the National Council of Resistance’s plans to establish a republic based on separation of church and state and pluralism in Iran which respects equal rights for women and men and guarantees the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, the declaration read.
NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi, who attended the parliamentary meeting, highlighted recent anti-government uprisings in Irans north-western Azeri provinces as well as several Iranian universities as indications that the regime was on its last legs and lacked internal support.
The message is clear. The people of Iran yearn and are ready for change, Rajavi said.
Under the present circumstance, coupled with stepped-up crackdown on the home front, the mullahs regime needs crisis and the export of fundamentalism and terrorism abroad more than ever to cover-up its domestic problems, she said.
She described Tehrans nuclear program as the biggest challenge the international communality is facing.
In 2002, her movement exposed two massive nuclear sites that Tehran had hidden from the international community.
The meeting was organised by five members of the French National Assembly and Senate – Pascal Terrasse, member of the Socialist Partys National Secretariat; Marc Reymann of the ruling UMP party and the vice-chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European Union; Gerard Charasse of the Radical Left Party; Georges Hage of the French Communist Party; and Senator Jean-Pierre Michel of the Socialist Party.
