London, Aug. 22 – European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana commented on Tuesday on the response received from Iran to the nuclear package of incentives offered to it by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany.

In a meeting on Tuesday with the ambassadors of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and Switzerland which was representing the United States, the secretary general of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani provided Tehran’s answer to a package of incentives offered to it in June by the P5+1 in return for it to suspend its uranium enrichment activities.

Iran’s state-run news agency Fars reported, “Tehran rejected any calls to suspend its nuclear activities, and instead prepared a new formula to resolve the issues through dialogue”.

“It is predicated that, faced with Iran’s legitimate, all-encompassing and technical response to the nuclear package, the West will take an isolated position and increase its threats via the UN Security Council”, it added.

The following is the text of a statement released by Solana’s office:

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), today commented on the response received from Iran to the E3+3 offer:

“The Iranian response to our offer was received today.

The document is extensive and therefore requires a detailed and careful analysis.

Pending this detailed analysis, I will be in contact with the different key interlocutors and will remain in open contact with Dr Ali Larijani, as we agreed on Sunday in our telephone conversation.”
