Ankara, Nov. 30 – Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will make an official visit to Iran on Saturday, according to a statement released by his office on Wednesday.

Erdogan will hold talks with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Vice President Parviz Davoudi on Sunday.

Earlier this year, Turkey and the United States held a joint military exercise involving ground, sea, and air forces aimed at countering the spread of missiles and nuclear technology to Iran among other countries.

The drills were part of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), under which Washington and its allies hold military manoeuvres to prevent the proliferation of nuclear materials.

There is speculation over the timing of Erdogan’s trip which takes place at a time when Iraq is embroiled in a security crisis and intensified deliberations are taking place in numerous political quarters in part focusing on the Iranian involvement.
