Tehran (dpa) – Preliminary nuclear talks between Iran and the European Union are to be held ‘within the next few days’ after the initial schedule had to be postponed, Iran’s deputy chief nuclear negotiator Javad Vaeidi said Wednesday.
Vaeidi and EU head of external affairs Robert Cooper were scheduled to meet in Vienna on Wednesday to prepare for the next round of talks between Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeid Jalili and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.
Vaeidi however told Fars news agency that the meeting was postponed due to ‘technical reasons’ as the two sides were still negotiating the date and venue.
State news agency IRNA also quoted an informed source from the Iranian nuclear delegation as saying that the reason for the delay was ‘technical.’
Vaeidi had said on Saturday that after technical evaluation of the Iranian nuclear programme by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Tehran was also ready to discuss with the EU the political aspects of the issue.
‘We are not afraid of negotiations as we have nothing to hide. But we will not give up our nuclear rights,’ Vaeidi said, referring to the main international demand for the suspension of uranium enrichment.
