Iran to be taken to UN Security Council if restarts nuclear work: Fischer

AFP: German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer warned on Sunday that Iran would be referred to the UN Security Council if it resumed nuclear enrichment which could be used for weapons. “If Iran behaves in an unreasonable way, if for example it restarts enrichment… then that would lead to the Security Council,” Fischer told an international security conference in the German city of Munich. MUNICH, Germany – German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer warned on Sunday that Iran would be referred to the UN Security Council if it resumed nuclear enrichment which could be used for weapons.

“If Iran behaves in an unreasonable way, if for example it restarts enrichment… then that would lead to the Security Council,” Fischer told an international security conference in the German city of Munich.

The world is awaiting the outcome of negotiations led by Germany, France and Britain over Iran’s nuclear programme.

The Europeans are trying to offer economic and political benefits to Iran to persuade it not to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran insists it is not seeking to build a bomb, but the United States suspects Tehran is working on a covert weapons programme that could spark an arms race in the Middle East.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said this month that a military attack on Iran is not on the agenda for the time being but has urged the European negotiators to take a tough line with Iran.
