ImageTEHRAN (Reuters) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran's nuclear issue "belongs in the past" on Sunday, indicating there would be no change in nuclear policy during his second term in office.

The hard-line president made his comments at a news conference broadcast by Iranian state television .

Iranian police again clashed on Sunday with demonstrators protesting in Tehran against his re-election.

Analysts said the poll result would disappoint Western powers trying to convince the world's fifth biggest oil exporter to halt nuclear activities they suspect are aimed at making bombs. Tehran denies this saying its aim is to generate power.

Ahmadinejad was planning celebrations in the capital later on Sunday. His unexpectedly overwhelming victory and its violent aftermath raised fresh questions about how Iran will respond to U.S. President Barack Obama's diplomatic overtures.

Obama had urged Iran's leadership "to unclench its fist."
