Iran November 2019 protesters

The heads of the commissions of the Iranian parliament have written a letter to the mullahs’ president Hassan Rouhani about the dire living conditions of the people, but don’t think that these politicians are feeling any sympathy for the poor, the unemployed, the hungry, or the child laborers.

Instead, they are worried about preserving their fragile regime, as evidenced by the last sentence in the letter, “when the flood starts, you won’t be able to block it”, an obvious reference to the ongoing protests by these groups across Iran that will no doubt lead to an uprising. It is clear they are worried about a starving majority descending on regime offices and literally forcing them out of power, rather than that people are starving in the first place due to the regime’s ineptitude.

The parliament, due to an election rigged by the Supreme Leader, is stacked with Rouhani’s opponents who like to blame him for all the country’s problems, when the rot is evident in the entire regime. But through this infighting, the officials are admitting that real cause of poverty in Iran is not international sanctions, as the mullahs so often protest, but the regime itself. In fact, the Friday prayer leader of Zabol, Sistan and Baluchestan province, openly said that the majority of the problem was down to the regime itself.

So why does the government not change its corrupt economic policies to benefit the people and attempt to stall the overthrow? Well, it cannot afford to. The money they steal from the Iranian people is used to fund domestic suppression and regional warfare. Moreover, it is personally enriching more than a few officials.

That is why authorities have responded to protests with violence, hoping to stop people holding rallies. But the rallies continued, amid the coronavirus no less, because this is about something more important than life or death. It’s about freedom.

The regime responded by arresting young people en-masse and sentencing many protesters from the November uprising to death.

The Iranian Resistance wrote: “As the past few years have shown, the policy of ramping up pressure and repression against the population is becoming increasingly ineffective. In the series of uprisings that happened in 2018, 2019, and 2020, the people of Iran have shown that their fear of the regime’s violence is diminishing by the day. And as the public rage against the regime builds up again, a single spark is all it will take to set it aflame.”
