Tehran, Iran, Dec. 09 – A senior Iranian cleric called on Palestinians on Friday to continue their “resistance” against Israel.

The remarks by Tehran Friday prayers leader Hojjatoleslam Ahmad Khatami came during a sermon which was attended by Palestinian Prime Minister and top Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh.

“We believe that only the Islamic faith can save the Palestinian people. Those who falsely speak of democracy have shown that the one issue they do not care about is democracy. Instead of acknowledging and supporting the popular Palestinian government, they are openly threatening it”, Khatami said referring to the decision by the United States and the European Union to freeze financial aid to the Hamas-led government unless it recognises Israel’s right to exist.

Iran has given Haniyeh’s administration some 120 million dollars to counter the West’s pressures.

Khatami said that there was a need for the Palestinian people to continue their resistance against the Jewish state. “God is with those who are patient”, he told the crowd.

In his speech, Haniyeh once again vowed that Hamas would not recognise Israel.
