Tehran, Iran, Mar. 11 – Iran is in the process of buying 150 locomotives from German electronics giant Siemens and has already begun to make payment, state media reported on Tuesday.

The managing director of Islamic Republic of Iran Railway Company, Hassan Ziari, said that Tehran had paid 25 percent (90 million euros) of the total $450-million deal to Siemens AG, the state-owned English-language daily Tehran Times wrote.

The report quoted Ziari as saying that the deal had originally been struck in 2006, and the German side had vowed to deliver the first train to Iran within 30 months.

Siemens AG is Europe’s largest engineering conglomerate, the report added.
