London, Aug. 22 – United States President George W. Bush said on Monday that the United Nations should move quickly to impose sanctions on Iran if it did not comply with a demand by the UN Security Council to suspend uranium enrichment, a key process in making a nuclear bomb.

Asked whether he was confident that the Security Council would move quickly on sanctions if Iran ignored the August 31 deadline to suspend uranium enrichment, Bush said, “I certainly hope so”.

“In order for the UN to be effective, there must be consequences if people thumb their nose at the United Nations Security Council. And we will work with people in the Security Council to achieve that objective, and the objective is that there’s got to be a consequence for them basically ignoring what the Security Council has suggested through resolution”, he said.

The Security Council adopted a legally-binding resolution on July 31 ordering Tehran to freeze all its uranium enrichment activities by August 31 or face possible sanctions.
