A Report From Iran’s Notorious Gohardasht Prison, and Introducing a Torturer

-

Gohar Dasht Prison

By Jubin Katiraie

A warden only known as Moharrami was transferred to Ward 8 of Iran’s notorious Gohardasht Prison (Rajaii Shahr) in Karaj two years ago from Ward 209 (the Intelligence Ministry’s ward) in Evin Prison in Tehran.

According to reports received, he was responsible for giving telephone calls to political prisoners in Ward 209, which were provided once a week for five to ten minutes after several months without such a possibility.

But this torturer in the middle of telephone conversations deliberately disconnected the phone or angered the inmate who was in contact with his family or argued during the inmate’s call and thus tortured the inmate mentally while talking to his family.

Another task of this intelligence element was giving tea to prisoners. Before or after interrogation by Ward 209 interrogators in Evin prison he gave tea to the prisoners.

And the prisoners later found out that this torturer in cooperation with other interrogators in Evin had spiked the tea with nausea drugs so that the situation of the prisoners became critical before the interrogation. And through this way, they forced the prisoners to confess.

This torturer has been in operating in Rajaii Shahr Prison, in Ward 8 (run by the Ministry of Intelligence) for two years now, under the title of Expert (Torturer) and is the Ministry of Intelligence liaison with political prisoners.

According to political prisoners, this person is neurotic when facing political prisoners. He tells them that all political prisoners must be tortured to death, or that political prisoners must remain in prison for their entire life.

Other features of this “expert”: Like any other torturer who lies, in this sense, he is very famous.  He constantly gives untruthful reports to inmates to put more pressure on them.

According to reports from inside the prison, after the November protests in 2019, protesters of the Alborz province were mainly transferred to Ward 8 of Rajai Shahr Prison after being arrested, and Moharrami was one of the interrogators who beat the detainees extremely badly.

According to witnesses at the scene, the detainees of the November protests were taken to break just wearing underwear and held in cold weather and were beaten. One of the wardens who was active in torturing and beating the prisoners was Moharrami.

This torturer also encouraged the chiefs of hall 10 and 11 of the prison block 4, Vali Mohammadi, and the chief of hall 21 of prison block 7, Mohammed Gooderz, and chief of hall 36 of prison block 10, Gerami, to put the political prisoners under pressure. A policy that creates psychological and physical harm to prisoners and their families.

When the special guards of the Rajai Shahr prison attacked the Sunni political prisoners on 3 September 2019 in hall 36 of prison block 10, the main perpetrators of this crime, Allah Karam Azizi and Moharrami, monitored and led the onslaught against the prisoners.
